Kelly - Disability Support Worker

What are your hobbies outside of working?

They fluctuate often, I find myself to be quite the hobby hoarder as I really do just want to try and learn everything that’s available to me, but they do fluctuate between creative and physical outlets. Some of my favourites have been free-diving, skateboarding, bouldering, salsa/bachata, yoga, painting, hiking, breathwork, cooking and op-shopping ! But frankly the list is endless and I'm always keen to learn new tricks. I very much embody “you only live once”.

How do you connect with young people?

I find being as goofy and genuine as I can to be the best approach, and leading with honesty and collaboration as much as possible. I do my best to tailor my expression to match or complement the people I work with, while still staying true to myself. Although also being neurodivergent probably definitely helps in ways too.

What were you like growing up?

Starting support work was one of those things that fell into my lap at the right moment. I started as a disability swim teacher (and still am!), and someone thought I would be a great fit. It’s been over three years for me now and I love the role. In my adolescence it was my dream to make an ND club at my high school, for other ND girls like myself. A lot of shifts feel like that for me and it brings me so much joy. Making someone feel seen, understood, and supported in a way that actually meets them where they’re at is what brings me fulfilment in life!
