Steph D - Support Worker
Steph D - East Melbourne
What are your hobbies outside of working?
I love to read in my spare time! I also love being artistic (although I am not that artistically gifted) and doing the occasional craft activity. My other hobbies include pilates, going to the gym and watching F1. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time with my family and playing board games with my friends.
What inspired you to become a Support Worker?
I was inspired to become a support worker because I have always been surrounded by individuals with disabilities and/or neurodivergence. Supporting those around me has always come naturally to me and after finding out I was neurodivergent at the age of 23 I felt that the challenges I faced as a child finally made sense.
I wish to help neurodivergent kids and young people feel accepted and comfortable in a world that isn't necessarily designed for them. I also want them to feel understood in a way I never really did. This work is also so rewarding, giving me the opportunity to help kids reach their full potential and grow in confidence in a safe and encouraging environment.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always felt that everyone else had a handbook or manual for life that I never got or understood. I was very social and did well in school, but I knew I was somehow different. Now knowing I am neurodivergent, these challenges and experiences make sense to me. As a kid, I was also very empathetic, patient and kind, which came from being surrounded by others with different disabilities and neurodivergence. I had my fair share of hobbies too, whether it be swimming, gymnastics, dance, Scouts, or netball, I tried them all.
